Day 20 : School Internship Phase 1

On August 27, 2024, I took three classes, each offering its own set of experiences and challenges. The day unfolded with a mix of excitement and determination, as I sought to impart knowledge while refining my teaching skills. My first class of the day was with 8A, where the focus was on solving problems related to regular polygons. Later, I met with 9C to explore the intricacies of multiplicative identities. As I navigated these sessions, I became acutely aware of areas where I could improve, particularly in fostering more friendly interactions with the students and enhancing my blackboard skills. The class with 8A was engaging as we delved into the concept of regular polygons. I aimed to make the lesson as interactive as possible, prompting the students to think critically about the properties of these shapes. We discussed the characteristics of regular polygons, such as equal sides and angles, and worked through several problems that required applying these properties. The students were eager to participate, and their enthusiasm was palpable. However, I couldn't help but notice that my interaction with them could have been warmer and more encouraging. While the content was well-received, I realized that my approach could have been more personable, fostering a stronger connection with the students. In the 9C class, the topic of multiplicative identities was at the forefront. We explored how different identities work within multiplication, including the significance of the multiplicative identity, which states that any number multiplied by one remains unchanged. The students were engaged and seemed to grasp the concept well, yet there was a lingering sense that I could do more to create an atmosphere of collaboration and camaraderie. Friendly interaction is not just about making students feel comfortable; it's about building a rapport that encourages them to express their thoughts and questions openly. I reflected on how I could be more approachable and supportive, perhaps by incorporating more group activities or informal discussions that would allow the students to connect with both the material and with me on a more personal level. Another area that stood out during these sessions was my use of the blackboard. While I pride myself on maintaining neat and clean blackboard work, I recognized that there is always room for improvement. The blackboard is a crucial tool in any classroom, serving as the primary visual aid for students. It needs to be not just legible but also organized in a way that enhances understanding. I took care to ensure that my writing was clear and that the problems were presented in a logical sequence. However, I realized that the pace at which I wrote and explained could be better synchronized to keep the students on track with the lesson. Additionally, I pondered whether I could make the blackboard more visually engaging, perhaps by incorporating different colors for key points or using diagrams more effectively to illustrate complex ideas. In reflecting on the day, I understood that effective teaching is a continuous process of learning and adaptation. The lessons I taught on regular polygons and multiplicative identities were valuable not just for the students but for me as well. They highlighted the importance of blending subject knowledge with interpersonal skills, showing me that the success of a lesson is not solely dependent on the accuracy of the information conveyed but also on how it is delivered. By focusing on fostering more friendly interactions and refining my blackboard skills, I can create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. This will not only help the students grasp the concepts better but also make them feel more connected to the learning process.
Moving forward, I plan to incorporate these insights into my teaching practice. I will strive to be more attentive to the students' needs, offering encouragement and support whenever possible. I will also continue to refine my blackboard skills, ensuring that my writing is not only clear but also strategically organized to aid comprehension. By making these adjustments, I am confident that I can enhance the overall learning experience for my students, making each lesson more engaging, effective, and enjoyable. This journey of self-improvement is essential to becoming a more effective educator, one who can inspire students to not only learn but also to love learning.
