Day 38 : School Internship Phase 1

On October 3, 2024, a vibrant and lively atmosphere filled St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School in Palayam as the School Youth Festival 2024, themed "സപര്യ," took place. This event celebrated the diverse talents of students and fostered a sense of community and creativity. As a teacher, I was fortunate to be invited to serve as a judge for two events: Vanchipattu and Malayalam Elocution. This opportunity not only enriched my professional experience but also provided me with a deeper appreciation for the cultural expressions of our youth.

The day began with an air of excitement. Students were gathered in groups, some rehearsing their performances while others anxiously awaited their turn. The festival’s theme, "സപര്യ," meaning "expedition" or "journey," resonated throughout the venue, symbolizing the journey of self-discovery and expression that each student undertakes through their participation in such events. As I walked through the bustling halls of the school, I was struck by the enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the students. They had clearly invested time and effort into preparing for their performances.
My first judging assignment was for the Vanchipattu competition, a traditional form of singing that is deeply rooted in Kerala’s cultural heritage. The participants were tasked with performing folk songs that conveyed stories of everyday life, nature, and local folklore. As I took my seat among the other judges, I felt a mix of anticipation and responsibility. This was a chance for me to witness firsthand the unique voices and interpretations of our rich cultural history.

The performances began, and I was immediately captivated. Each student brought their own flair to the traditional songs, showcasing not just their vocal abilities but also their understanding of the lyrics and the emotions behind them. Some students performed solo, while others participated in group renditions that echoed the communal spirit of Vanchipattu. The diversity in their interpretations was a testament to their creativity and connection to the material. I was particularly moved by a group of students who seamlessly blended traditional tunes with modern elements, illustrating the dynamic nature of our cultural practices.

As a judge, my role was not merely to evaluate the performances but to appreciate the passion and hard work that each student put into their craft. I took careful notes on their vocal techniques, stage presence, and the emotional resonance of their performances. It was essential for me to provide constructive feedback, highlighting their strengths while also offering suggestions for improvement. The joy on their faces when they received compliments was infectious, and I found myself reflecting on the importance of nurturing creativity in our educational environment.

Following the Vanchipattu performances, I transitioned to the Malayalam Elocution competition. This event aimed to celebrate the art of public speaking in our native language, allowing students to express their thoughts on various topics, from social issues to personal experiences. The participants were tasked with conveying their messages with clarity, confidence, and emotion. As I listened to the speakers, I was reminded of the power of language as a tool for connection and advocacy.

Each elocutionist had chosen their topic thoughtfully, demonstrating a deep understanding of the subjects they addressed. Some spoke passionately about environmental issues, while others shared personal anecdotes that highlighted the struggles and triumphs of their generation. The eloquence and poise with which they presented their ideas were impressive, especially considering their young age. I found myself reflecting on the importance of empowering students to voice their opinions and fostering a culture where dialogue and expression are valued.

One particularly memorable speech came from a student who spoke about the significance of preserving our cultural heritage. Their words resonated with me, as they articulated the delicate balance between tradition and modernity that our society grapples with today. It was clear that this student had invested time in researching their topic, and their ability to convey complex ideas in a relatable manner was commendable. As I took notes, I felt a sense of pride in the potential of our youth to shape a brighter future through their voices.

Throughout the day, I interacted with fellow judges, teachers, and students, all of whom were eager to share their experiences and insights. Conversations flowed freely, fostering a sense of camaraderie among everyone involved. This collaborative spirit was a reminder of the importance of community in educational settings. We exchanged ideas about teaching methodologies, creative projects, and ways to further engage students in cultural activities. It was inspiring to see how each participant brought their unique perspectives to the table, enriching our collective understanding of education and creativity.

As the festival drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the impact of events like these on students’ lives. For many, participating in competitions like Vanchipattu and Malayalam Elocution was not just about winning; it was about discovering their passions, building confidence, and learning to express themselves. The joy and excitement in their eyes were testament to the transformative power of such experiences. It reminded me that, as educators, we have a crucial role in nurturing creativity and encouraging our students to embrace their individuality.
The experience of judging at the School Youth Festival 2024 was more than just a professional responsibility; it was a profound reminder of the vitality of our cultural traditions and the importance of fostering a supportive environment for young voices. As I left St. Joseph's HSS that day, I felt invigorated by the energy and creativity I had witnessed. The festival had not only showcased the incredible talents of our youth but also reinforced the idea that education is not solely about academic achievements; it is also about cultivating a love for the arts, fostering critical thinking, and encouraging self-expression. I returned home inspired, grateful for the opportunity to engage with the students and witness their journeys of growth and discovery.
