DAY 6 : SCHOOLINTERSHIP PHASE 1
On August 5, 2024, I continued my journey as a school intern, marking the sixth day of my internship's first phase. The day was filled with anticipation and preparation as I was scheduled to teach three classes. Each class brought its unique challenges and learning experiences, contributing to my growth as an educator.
The first class of the day was with 8A, where the topic was solving equations to find unknowns. I had spent considerable time planning the lesson, focusing on making the content engaging and accessible. The goal was to help the students understand the process of solving equations by isolating the variable, a fundamental concept in algebra. I introduced the topic by explaining the importance of equations in mathematics and real life, aiming to spark the students' interest. Using examples and interactive questions, I demonstrated how to move terms across the equals sign and balance equations. As the class progressed, I observed that most pupils were able to catch up with the topic. They seemed to understand the step-by-step approach to finding unknowns, and there was a noticeable eagerness to solve the problems presented.
However, not everything went smoothly. A few students struggled, particularly when it came to establishing relationships between variables. They found it challenging to understand how different parts of the equation related to each other and how manipulating one part affected the other. I noticed the confusion on their faces as they attempted to grasp the concept. To address this, I paused the lesson to revisit the foundational ideas, using more concrete examples and analogies. I emphasized the importance of understanding the variables' roles and how they interact within an equation. Despite these efforts, I realized that some students needed additional time and practice to fully comprehend the topic. It was a valuable lesson for me, highlighting the importance of pacing and differentiation in teaching. The experience reminded me that each student learns at their own pace and that it's crucial to provide support tailored to their individual needs.
The second class was with 9C, where the focus shifted to the construction of geometrical figures using the unequal division of parallel lines. This topic required a different teaching approach, as it involved both theoretical understanding and practical application. I began the lesson by explaining the concept of parallel lines and how they can be divided into unequal segments. Using diagrams and visual aids, I illustrated how these divisions can be used to construct various geometrical figures. The students were then guided through a step-by-step process to construct these figures themselves. I provided them with the necessary tools, such as rulers and protractors, and encouraged them to follow along with the demonstration. The hands-on nature of the activity seemed to engage the students, and they quickly got to work.
Most of the students were able to complete the work successfully. They followed the instructions carefully and constructed the required figures with precision. I walked around the classroom, observing their progress and offering assistance where needed. It was rewarding to see the students' enthusiasm and their sense of accomplishment as they completed their constructions. However, there were a few students who faced difficulties. Some struggled with the precision required in measuring and drawing, while others found it challenging to understand the concept of unequal division. I provided additional guidance, offering one-on-one support to those who needed it. I emphasized the importance of accuracy in geometry and encouraged them to practice the techniques.
Reflecting on the day's experiences, I realized the importance of adaptability in teaching. Each class presented different challenges, requiring me to adjust my approach and strategies. In 8A, the challenge was to help students grasp abstract algebraic concepts, while in 9C, the focus was on practical application and precision. The day also underscored the importance of creating an inclusive learning environment. Some students needed more time and support, and it was my responsibility to ensure they received it. Whether it was through revisiting foundational concepts or providing individual assistance, I strived to cater to each student's unique needs.
Overall, Day 6 of my school internship was a valuable learning experience. It provided me with insights into the complexities of teaching and the diverse needs of students. The challenges I faced helped me grow as an educator, teaching me the importance of patience, adaptability, and empathy. As I continue this internship journey, I look forward to further honing my skills and making a positive impact on my students' learning experiences.
